Weekend Roundup

I've got my laundry going and a fresh mug of coffee here by my side. Should I write a post with all of those links I mentioned in class this week? Let's do it.

Need something to put on in the background as you pack? Julien Temple's London might be just the thing. The documentary chronicles the last hundred or so years in Britain, from the suffragettes to Twiggy to Occupy. Temple stitches together footage from the British Film Institute, so the effect is impressionistic rather than strictly narrative. Not exactly Simon Schama (my fave pop historian), but still great.

As you can hear from the trailer, the soundtrack is amazing. Temple started his career making short films with the Sex Pistols, and his street cred comes through in the music: X-Ray Spex, the Clash, the Kinks, Siouxsie Sioux. Yeah, he's cooler than all of us.

Gilbert White, Gilbert White House

If you're interested in turtles (and I know some of you are), you should consider traveling to Selbourne, Hampshire to visit the home of Gilbert White, a famous eighteenth-century naturalist and ecologist. White is known for his book The Natural History and Antiquities of Selborne (1789), a series of letters chronicling his observations of the natural world. Ever the friendly environmentalist, his journals include his notes on a turtle friend of his named Timothy. I believe Timothy now resides in the Natural History Museum in London, but there's a sweet little statue of him on the grounds of White's home.

Dry Socks, Waterproof Shoes

Scotchgard, guys. It's how I waterproofed my canvas shoes. I've also read posts about proofing with beeswax, but I've never given it a try.

Time to forward the laundry and refill my coffee. More soon! Dr. D
